“I Want to Live Life to the Ultimate High.” -Prince
Hi sweethearts. You wanna know something? I was in a relationship with Prince. Yes, that Prince. He called me Darling. Plus, I have a purple paisley tattoo on my hip. It’s all very official.
Well, official or not, Prince taught me much about joy and the promise of love. I’m celebrating his birthday today listening to songs that brought hope to my teenage years and continue to lift my spirits whenever I hear them. These three albums, in particular, are in heavy rotation when my mood needs a boost.
When this album came out, I was awkwardly waiting for puberty to grace me as it had some of my friends. I wanted boobs and the attention of the cute older ninth graders. I had such low goals back then. Thankfully, I also had a lot of time to listen to music. Prince made me feel like I was seen.
Favorite Lyrics:
“Now dig. Loneliness already knows you.
There ain’t no reason to stay.
Come here and take my hand, I’ll show you.
I think I know a better way, y’all” –Around the World in a Day
“The girl on the seesaw is laughing
For love is the color
This place imparts.
Admission is easy, just say you
Believe and come to this
Place in your heart.” –Paisley Park
Everything about this album is fun. Yes, including the movie. The comedic chemistry between Prince and Jerome in Under the Cherry Moon was hilarious. Plus, the movie and the album cover were in black and white. That was enough to make it classy to me at age 14.
Favorite Lyrics:
“Goodness will guide us
If love is inside us.” –Christopher Tracy’s Parade
“Life can be so nice.
It’s a wonderful world, sweet paradise.” –Life Can Be So Nice
“It’s only mountains and the sea
Love will conquer if you just believe.” –Mountains
By the time this album came out, I thought I was grown. I just wanted to party and fall in love. And dance to Prince well after curfew.
Favorite Lyrics:
“We’re going to play in the sunshine
We’re going to get over
I’m feeling kind of lucky tonight
I’m going to find my four-leaf clover
Before my life is done
Some way, somehow, I’m going to have fun.” –Play in the Sunshine
“No time for sorrow, this is going to be the one
Tonight’s there’s no tomorrow
Tonight we’re going to have some fun.” –
Prince painted a musical world of joy, dancing, and true love. His songs’ themes of love’s ability to conquer all provided hope to me as a teenager and makes me happy to this day. What artists/songs do y’all put on to lift your mood? Share them and we’ll dance.
